Indian cuisine, celebrated globally for its diverse flavors and rich traditions, continues to captivate hearts worldwide. From the delicate idlis of the south to the savory kebabs of the north, every dish tells a unique story of India's vibrant culinary heritage. This year, two Indian restaurants, Mumbai's Masque and New Delhi's Indian Accent, have made a significant mark by being included in the World's 100 Best Restaurants list, released by media company William Reed.

Indian Gems on the Global Stage

Masque, Mumbai

Ranked at 78th, Masque is a standout establishment founded by Prateek Sadhu and Aditi Dugar in 2016. Located in Mumbai’s historic textile mill district, this innovative restaurant is renowned for its pioneering 10-course tasting menu, a first in India, priced at Rs 5200. Head chef Varun Totlani leads a team dedicated to crafting modern Indian dishes with a unique blend of traditional techniques and global influences, using locally sourced ingredients. Masque's inventive approach has also earned it the 23rd spot on the 2024 list of Asia's 50 Best Restaurants.

Indian Accent, New Delhi

Securing the 89th position, Indian Accent is another Indian culinary gem. Established by Rohit Khattar in 2009, this restaurant has been a staple of excellence, named the best restaurant in India for seven consecutive years from 2015 to 2021. With additional locations in London and New York, Indian Accent is celebrated for its Indian fusion cuisine, masterfully curated by Chef Manish Mehrotra. Renowned for his inventive tasting menus, Chef Mehrotra's dishes offer a creative twist on classic Indian flavors, such as the galangal-infused patrani macchi and the playful potato sphere chaat.

Global Culinary Excellence

In addition to these Indian restaurants, other notable entries on the list include Gaggan in Bangkok, helmed by Indian chef Gaggan Anand, which secured the 9th spot. Gaggan has been recognized as Asia's Best Restaurant for the second year in a row, climbing from 17th place in 2023. Leading the list is Disfrutar in Barcelona, a culinary powerhouse with three Michelin stars, run by a trio of chefs who previously worked at the legendary El Bulli.

The inclusion of Masque and Indian Accent in the World's 100 Best Restaurants highlights the global appeal of Indian cuisine and its ongoing evolution on the world stage. As these restaurants continue to innovate and push the boundaries of culinary art, they reinforce India's status as a significant player in the international gastronomic community.
